How to Embrace Change and Create Your Ideal Travel Lifestyle
When I sat for a new house-sitting host last year, I had no idea it would turn into something more.
Now, in 2025, at her invitation, I have the unique opportunity to use her home as a base when she’s away—sometimes with her dogs, sometimes without. She travels often, competing in equestrian events and balancing business and leisure travel. When she’s home, I head off on my own adventures, staying with friends, finding other house sits, or traveling for fun.
This arrangement means I need to find housing for less than 130 days this year. It gives me flexibility, allows me to travel light with just a carry-on, and provides a sense of stability even while living a nomadic lifestyle. Best of all, it aligns perfectly with my new remote, interim job - you can read about it here.
But this isn’t just about my experience - it’s about how you and I choose to live our lives, see and embrace change.
The Power of Openness
Too often, we assume that big shifts in life require careful planning or happen only to the lucky few. But opportunities can come and go—it’s what we do with them that matters.
I’d say this arrangement was 50% luck (being in the right place at the right time), 25% being open to possibilities/change, and 25% actively making my own path.
For those of us over 60 who want to travel well for less, the lesson is simple: be open. Be open to meeting new people, to considering non-traditional living arrangements, and to stepping outside of a rigid plan. When we do, unexpected doors open.
Change is a Choice
At 65, I’m proving to myself and others that life can be shaped in new ways. Instead of seeing this age as a time to slow down, I see it as an opportunity to pivot, adapt, and create the life I want. That doesn’t mean change isn’t scary—it often is. But it also means we don’t have to be stuck.
If you want more travel in your life, if you’re wondering how to make it financially sustainable, if you’re craving adventure but unsure how to begin—start by being open. Look at house sitting, remote work, extended stays, and creative housing options. The traditional path isn’t the only one.
Make Life Happen
As we get older, we gain wisdom, confidence, and (hopefully) a little more patience. But what we also need is the courage to shape our lives the way we want. We can wait for opportunities to find us, or we can seek them out. I choose to be proactive or put myself in positions to see and be seen.
If you’re feeling stuck, consider what small changes could lead to bigger shifts. Maybe its exploring house sitting, reaching out to a friend in another city, or researching remote work options. Maybe it’s simply saying “yes” to an opportunity that feels different but exciting.
Travel doesn’t have to be a break from real life. It can be part of life. It can be home, work, and adventure all rolled into one.
Opportunities are out there. Be open. Be ready. And when they come, grab them with both hands.
