Never Write Yourself Off: How to Embrace Change and Look for New Opportunities

Change is one of life’s constants. The truth is, it’s never too late to try something different or rewrite your story.

Yet so many of us resist change—whether it’s fear of the unknown, comfort in routine, or uncertainty about where to start. But what if change isn’t something to fear? What if it’s an opportunity to evolve, grow, and experience something new?

Why Change Matters

Change invites growth. It pushes us beyond our comfort zone and shows us possibilities we never considered. Whether it’s a big leap—like switching careers or moving to a new city—or trying a new hobby, connecting with a different community, change gives us a chance to shape the life we truly want.

How to Open Yourself to Possibilities

If you’re feeling stuck or unsure about how to move forward, here are some ideas that help me embrace change:

  1. Reflect on What Excites You: Think about the things that bring you joy or spark curiosity. Is there a project you’ve been putting off? A place you’ve always wanted to visit? I found the first step toward change is simply recognizing what lights you up. One of the reasons I started to learn a new skill - how to YouTube.

  2. Start Small: Big changes don’t always start with grand gestures. Maybe it’s updating your resume, joining a class, or exploring a new neighborhood. Small actions build momentum. My morning walks and workouts are when I find answers or inspiration.

  3. Ask, “What If?”: These are questions I ask all the time.
What if I say yes to that opportunity?
What if I stop waiting for the perfect moment?
My curiosity is often the best motivator for change.

  4. Seek Inspiration: Look to others who have embraced change. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or someone you follow online, their stories can remind you that it’s possible to pivot and thrive. I have joined several FB groups for people over 60 who are nomads or slow travel. And I follow IG accounts focused on travel.

  5. Embrace the Unknown: Change comes with uncertainty, but it also comes with possibility. Trust that every step forward teaches us something valuable, even if the outcome isn’t what we expected.

My Pivot: An Example of Saying Yes

Recently, I stepped into an interim leadership role, something I didn’t expect at this stage of life. It’s not that I’ve left behind my love of travel or my nomadic lifestyle, but I saw this as an opportunity to use my skills in a meaningful way while setting myself up for future adventures. This was the right one for me at this moment.

I share this not to highlight my story, but to show you that it’s possible to embrace change—whether you’re 25, 45, or 65. The key is to stay open, stay curious, and trust yourself to take the first step.

Your Turn: What’s Waiting for You?

Have you been thinking about making a change? Maybe it’s exploring a new career, saying yes to a dream trip, or simply starting something, you’ve put off for too long. What’s holding you back?

Here’s your reminder: It’s never too late to try. It’s never too late to rewrite your story. And it’s never too late to leap, saunter, walk into the possibilities that come with change.
